Over fifty years ago, Liu Guojiang, a 19 year-old boy, fell in love with a 29 year-old widowed mother named Xu Chaoqin...and they made a choice to live inside the cave up in a mountain to avoid public gossip. During that time, it was out of norm for a younger boy had a love affair with an older woman who had children from her previous marriage.

In the beginning, the couple was facing difficult life because they are living out in the wild with nothing; no electricity, no food. They survived on grass and roots diet that were found on the mountain region. Liu made a kerosene lamp to light up their lives at the night. They passed through their early years using primitive way of living as farmers

During the second year, Liu showed his overwhelming love for his wife by hand carving over 6000 stairs from the hill up to the mountain and into their cave. These stairs are meant to make journey easier for Xu so she could get up and down the mountain easily. It took over about 50 years to complete the stairways. The couple is blessed with 7 children.

In 2001, while exploring the forest, a group of adventurers were surprised to find the elderly couple; Liu was 70-years old and Xu was 80-years old as well as the 6,000 hand-carved stairways. Liu MingSheng, one of their seven children said, 'My parents loved each other so much, they have lived in seclusion for over 50 years and never been apart a single day.

Liu passed away at the age of 72 years. One day when he returned from his daily farm work, suddenly he collapsed. Xu was very worried and never stop praying, until finally her husband passed away with his hand still holding his wife hand. "You promised to take care and always together with me but if you left me first, how can I pass the rest of my life without you?" Xu always repeated these sentences with her tears flowing to the cheeks…she may have lost her beloved husband in this world but their heart has become immortal forever.

In 2006, their story became one of the top 10 love stories from China , collected by the
Chinese Women Weekly. The local government has decided to preserve the love ladder
and the place they lived as a museum, so this love story can live forever.
